Only one Australian "Waler" war horse out of the 121,000 horses Australia sent returned to Australia at the end of World War 1, she was an officer's horse named Sandy.
The Australian war horses were known as Walers because they were shipped out of New South Wales which was at the time the centre for Australian horse breeding. They were bred to work on the sheep stations and have evolved into what is now known as the Australian Stock Horse.
