On Friday 9th November members of the Blue Cross attended a special remembrance service at the Animals in War monument in Park Lane.
The monument was unveiled by HRH the Princess Royal in November 2004 to commemorate all the animals that died whilst serving alongside their human allies.
It is estimated that eight million horses and donkeys died in the First World War whilst carrying ammunition and supplies to the frontline.
Dogs too were important players as they were used to run messages, detect mines, and act as patrol dogs among many other tasks.
Perhaps slightly less known is the number of pigeons that served during the war, who risked their lives by carrying vital messages over long distances.
Blue Cross has been dedicated to helping sick, injured and homeless pets since 1897 and the Blue Cross Fund was set up to help animals in the Balkan Wars. It was later reintroduced following the outbreak of the First World War.
Members of the Blue Cross will also be attending the Remembrance Day march on Sunday and taking part in the two minute silence to remember our fallen heroes.
