The Brooke is the leading UK charity dedicated to relieving the suffering of horses, donkeys and mules working for poor people in developing countries. Founded by Dorothy Brooke who visited Cairo, Egypt, in 1930 and she was shocked and distressed at what she saw. Ex-war horses, used in the first world war, had been sold into hard labour. Poorly cared for, they were all very old and many were in terrible pain. Mrs Brooke was tormented by their plight, and wrote a letter to the Morning Post describing the suffering of these poor old war heroes. Showing immense generosity, the British public sent in donations to help, allowing her to establish the ‘Old War Horse Memorial Hospital’ – a free clinic for Cairo’s working horses and donkeys. The Brooke has worked in Egypt since 1934 to bring relief to suffering working horses and donkeys. Today, in Cairo, the original hospital established by Mrs Brooke still stands. It now has all the modern veterinary equipment needed by vets and animals working today. From humble beginnings, the Brooke has grown into an international equine lifesaver, with mobile vet teams plus an extensive community animal health programme, bringing veterinary care and training to some of the world’s poorest communities, in places like India, Ethiopia, Pakistan, and Kenya.
