Shoes with no heel eg. trainers are dangerous to ride in as they can allow your foot to slip through the stirrup, always wear sturdy boots with a heel and non-slip soles for riding.
To avoid injuries on the ground like the bruised foot below wear hard toed boots or shoes that offer protection to your foot.
Never wear sandals or flip flops around horses you could end up like this (be warned link leads to photographs of a foot injured as a result of wearing sandals around horses and they are not for the squeamish).
In poor weather conditions when the ground is slippery make sure you are wearing suitably soled boots or shoes to prevent slipping, this type of footwear often has deeply rigged soles that make them unsuitable for riding.
